This is my GPS signal receiver. (GPS: Global Postitioning Satelite)
I bought it from R.E.I. for $200 on August 1, 2003.
It is made by Garmin
I remember when I first heard about geocaching
and since then I've always wanted a gps unit. Then my friend Erik
invited me on a geocaching trip and I was hooked. I later borrowed his
gps unit and then finally bought one of my own. I also have cds which
allow you to install maps into these gps devices and thus have your own
cool little virtual map! Complete with street names and nearby
restaurants, exits, stores and such.
Praises:
- It has a backlight feature
- I can import and export waypoints to the GPS unit
- It has a virtual map and even phone numbers to
restaurants!
Complaints:
- This model takes 45 seconds to turn on and orient
itself.
- It has an internal antanne which makes it awkward to
know where to turn it to get the best reception. I wish there was a
port to connect an additional antanne, then maybe I wouldn't get so
many "Satellite Reception Lost" messages.
- 8mb of storage is only enough for one large city area..
everytime I come home to the Portland area I'll need to update the
city.
- There doesn't seem to be a way to modify the maps so if
there is an outdated restaurant you have to suffer with it.
Here is the
manual.

Future Wishes for my next GPS:
- Larger amounts of Map storage
- The ability to enter notes about the cache easily
- COMPLETE compatability with the geocaching website;
everytime I transfer caches to my device via cable they are only listed
as 'Waypoints' instead of a 'Geocache'.
- Mac compatible
